NOW Tests Vitamin C Gummy Supplements Sold on Amazon

Bloomingdale, IL (August 20, 2026) -- NOWⓇ, the largest family- and employee-owned manufacturer of natural products, in keeping with its mission to promote transparency and higher standards in the supplement industry, has released the latest testing results of products purchased on Amazon.  This category is Vitamin C gummies.

For analysis by two separate labs,  NOW purchased two bottles of each Vitamin C gummy supplement on Amazon.com in June 2026 (including the NOW brand, which was launched in April 2026  after a long search for a stable gummy that would retain potency). NOW tested 30 Vitamin C gummy supplements, as did the ISO 17025-accredited independent laboratory Alkemist Labs, to ensure accuracy and transparency.

Five of these were legacy brands NOW expected to pass testing, while the remaining brands had labeling that raised questions.  Results showed that 48% of the non-legacy brands’ products failed potency testing, with nearly no detectable Vitamin C, and an additional 16% would likely fail before their expiration date.1

“After nine years of conducting these rounds of marketplace testing, it is deeply disappointing to still see so many substandard products being sold to consumers,” said Dan Richard, NOW’s Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing.

Why Vitamin C Gummies?

Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, is an essential nutrient necessary for the proper function of many bodily processes including immune system function. Unlike most animals, humans cannot produce Vitamin C and must obtain it from their diet. Additionally, gummies are a challenging dosage format for stability. Ensuring supplements contain the correct amount of active ingredient at the expiration date is essential to meet legal requirements in keeping with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).

Testing Methodology

·       Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) was quantified by HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) using a validated reverse-phase method.

Product Testing Results

·       Out of 25 brands, only 13 met the label claim for Vitamin C.

·       12 of the failing brands had nearly no detectable Vitamin C.

·       Four of the passing brands are likely to fall below their declared amount of Vitamin C before their expiration date because Vitamin C degrades in the gummy format.1

·       25 brands are listed below among those that NOW questioned.  They also tested five other legacy brands that they expected to pass testing:  Mary Ruth’s, Nature’s Way, New Chapter, Nordic Naturals and Solgar all passed potency testing with extra overages.

Importance of Analytical Method Selection and Stability Studies

Choosing the correct testing method for Vitamin C is critical. Non-specific methods, such as spectrophotometric assays, can be fooled by other constituents of gummies, such as flavorings or sugars, with certain methods. These methods may artificially inflate potency results, making products appear compliant when they are not. In contrast, HPLC can separate and identify Vitamin C from closely related compounds, providing an accurate and reliable measure of product quality. Testing by both NOW and Alkemist Labs relied on chromatographic specificity, ensuring confidence in the results.

Stability is also an important consideration when formulating supplements to ensure the labeled amount of active ingredient remains present over its intended lifetime, especially in the gummy format. Stability studies are time-consuming and expensive, but they show when increases in overage, or the extra amount of active ingredient, are required in a formula. In NOW’s studies, they have seen that a loss of about 20% per year is possible, hence the need for high overage at the time of manufacture.

Conclusion

This round of testing was especially disappointing, with nearly two-thirds of the suspected brands either failing testing or expected to fail before expiration. Notably, all five brands that claimed 1,000 mg or higher of Vitamin C per gummy had the worst potency results. Each of these five brands contained less than 2 mg total Vitamin C, which is far under 1% of the label claim. These brands include: Ceecisee, Fudualvdel, LiliCare, Neviss and Vemluta. Additionally, these five brands each labeled their products with ridiculous claims of very high potencies, using liposomal forms of Vitamin C, and unrealistically high amounts of various synergistic ingredients.

“It is sad to see such dishonest marketing being used and permitted to fool consumers,” Dan said. “ NOW is sharing this report with both the FDA and Amazon, which should take action to remove these “bad actors” from the marketplace.”

NOW® Vitamin C Gummies were among the samples that met the label claim throughout their intended lifetime. NOW’s in-house analytical testing, paired with Alkemist Labs’ independent verification, underscores the importance of scientifically valid methods. NOW will continue to purchase and test products sold on major online platforms and publicly share the results to encourage higher quality standards across the supplement industry.
